Coaching Framework — How we coach
Coaching environment, session design, coaching style and what every session should aim to do.
Handbook pages 17, 18
Coaching Environment: every session should be safe, inclusive, enjoyable, challenging and player-centred. Set high standards while recognising every player develops at a different rate.
Session Design
- Purpose — what are we developing?
- Warm-up — movement, fun and engagement
- Skill Development — introduce and practise
- Game-Based Learning — apply through decisions
- Review — player reflection and feedback
Coaching Style
- Keep explanations brief; demonstrate where useful
- Maximise active participation
- Encourage players to solve problems; ask open questions
- Praise effort, learning and teamwork
- Accept mistakes as part of learning
- Adapt sessions to the players present
- Challenge players positively
Facilitate learning rather than simply instruct — help players discover solutions for themselves.
Every coaching session should aim to:
- Maximise player involvement and enjoyment
- Minimise queues and inactivity
- Encourage decision-making
- Provide opportunities for repetition and learning
- Include appropriate challenge for all players
- Finish with a game or game-like activity wherever possible
“Players learn most by doing. If a session is enjoyable, players return — and if players return, development follows.”
