Player Development
The GHA Development Journey
Every stage of development builds on the one before it — and no stage should be rushed.
Handbook page 27
Every stage of development builds upon the one before it:
- Players first develop confidence and movement
- These foundations support rugby skills
- Rugby skills support game understanding
- Game understanding supports decision-making
- Decision-making supports confident performance
Throughout every stage, enjoyment, confidence and player welfare remain the priority. No stage should be rushed — every player develops at their own pace.
Final principle: every player develops differently. Success should never be judged solely by physical maturity, representative honours or early performance. The role of every GHA coach is to help every player become the best version of themselves, on and off the field.
Let each player's stage of development inform coaching, selection, session planning and communication with parents.
